Collaborative Styled-Shoot Competition Proposal

The Association of Wedding Professionals of Greater Washington, DC (AWP) will host a collaborative styled-shoot contest for members and participating non-members. This experience will allow AWP to broaden its reach as a business-network for wedding professionals in the Washington, DC area; and allow members to network with other AWP professionals to achieve excellence within their respective fields. This competition will be a stand-alone event with the option to expand into an annual event in the future.

Participation Guidelines:

Competition teams must be initiated by an AWP member in good standing to participate. Non-members who are interested in participating should contact a current AWP member to form a competition team. A list of current AWP members may be found here.

A team captain is to be designated by your respective group and is responsible for forming the styled shoot committee for said group. AWP will not assist, nor be responsible in helping groups to secure participants. Team captains must be AWP members. The team captain will be the main point of contact between your respective group and AWP on any inquiries that may arise.

Team captains should complete the Collaborative Styled-Shoot Competition registration form. The form will request the following information:

  • The overall team name;
  • the names and business names of their group members (at the time of entry);
  • a $50 entry fee*;
  • and a general outline/write-up of their shoot proposal.

This form must be submitted to the competition committee before commencing work on the styled-shoot. The competition registration form must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm EST on Sunday, September 1, 2019.
* We suggest each team divide the entry fee by the number of overall group participants, either at the time of entry, or once the entire team has been formed. It is up to each respective team on how fee dues are collected.

A minimum of five (5) group members, and a maximum of ten (10) group members will be permitted on each team. Each team must include at least one (1) professional photographer and the use of at least one (1) model of any gender to qualify. Competition participants can participate on more than one (1), but no more than three (3) teams; but it is up to each respective team to discuss confidentiality guidelines and procedures. Participating vendors must be located within the following service areas: Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and West Virginia.Teams should represent a minimum of five (5) membership categories; however, more categories may be represented if desired. To be successfully judged, participating groups must submit the following no later than 11:59 pm EST on Sunday, October 20, 2019:

  • A collection of at least twenty-five (25) photographs of their styled-shoot event;
  • A listing of all participating members (inclusive of their contact information, websites, and social media handles);
  • their inspiration/mood board;
  • and a finalized written shoot description of your shoot concept.

Submissions should be sent via email to info@awp-dc.com with the following text in the subject line: “AWP Styled-Shoot Competition – TEAM NAME”.

Competition Overview:

AWP Invites wedding professionals to collaborate in teams to design, execute, and photograph a styled-shoot for a couple in the Greater Washington, DC area with the budget profile of your choice.

Competition Guidelines and Criteria:

Participating groups will be judged on the following categories:

  • Interpretation of Visual Story: 10 points
  • Photography: 10 points
  • Inclusivity: 10 points
  • Flair and Originality: 10 points
  • Use of Venue: 10 points
  • Cake Design: 10 points
  • Floral Design: 10 points
  • Event Styling & Execution: 10 points
  • Teamwork and Collaborative Effort: 10 points

Teams may be awarded up to five (5) additional bonus points for the use of meeting-attending non-members within their groups.

Teams may be awarded up to five (5) additional bonus points for the use of six (6) or more member categories. All teams will be awarded up to one hundred (100) possible points. Membership categories may be found here.

Judging:

A team of three (3) independent industry professionals will preside over the judging with each judge independently awarding points for each category based upon the criteria and rules set forth by AWP. Final points will be awarded by calculating the average for each category based on the three scores provided. Judges will be allowed to provide written feedback and constructive criticism to the participants to contribute positive reinforcement and guidance to members. The top three (3) performing teams will each be featured on the AWP website and social media platforms.

Promotion:

The competition will be promoted online until the week prior to the registration close date. Participating groups will be featured on the AWP website and social media channels upon the completion of the competition. Teams will not be permitted to share any photographs or behind-the-scenes candid shots of their styled-shoot until judging is complete.

With that said, these styled shoots are not exclusive to AWP and groups are permitted to submit shoots for publishing—but only after you have submitted the shoot for judging.

Awards Show Acknowledgement at the Annual AWP Gala:

AWP invites the participants of each contest team to attend our annual gala on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 to cheer on your team during the awards portion of the event! All attendees (no matter your membership status) will have to purchase a ticket to attend the gala. Contest participants will not be permitted free entry for the awards show portion of the night.

Award categories will feature team awards and stand-alone awards for excellence within individual vendor categories (for example: Best Cake Design, Best Photography, Best Hair and Makeup, etc.).

Contestants will be notified of their individual and group award standings the night of the event!
